GiGi, a great horned owl was in a terrible condition when first brought to Wild at Heart Rescue in Mississippi. The little creature’s fate seemed sealed after she got hit by a car. Even the volunteers at the centre were extremely sceptical about her chances of survive.
“This bird was one of the most critical we have ever taken care of,” Missy Dubuisson, the rescue’s founder told the Dodo. “The fact that this bird has lived is beyond comprehension.”
However, GiGi never gave up and she made a full recovery, beating all the odds. However, this would not have been possible if there wasn’t Douglas “Doug” Pojeky, a man who saved so many badly injured birds. Known as the “birds of prey whisperer,” Douglas gained the owl’s trust since day one.
“In all my years of working with birds of prey, I have never seen someone with such a bond with these magnificent birds, Dubuisson said. “It literally brings tears to my eyes to watch him interact with these birds. They absolutely know him and trust him. It’s the trust that you see in her face.”
Doug’s empathy and affection to these birds make him to be seen as an angel through their eyes. Therefore, when GiGi saw her rescuer after a few days, she just cannot stop hugging him.
